Sir David Attenborough and Ida

Visitors at the Natural History Museum in London may now see a cast of Ida (Darwinius masillae), a 47 million year fossil scientists believe is the link between primates and the rest of the mammals.

The cast was donated by the University of Oslo Natural History Museum. The original Ida was also at the NHM for a few hours last month where scientists had a look at the most complete ancient primate skeleton ever found.

The Pope and condoms

Pope condoms

You may recall that during his visit to the African continent back in March 2009 catholic church leader, pope Benedict XVI said the spread of HIV and Aids in Africa should be tackled through fidelity and abstinence and not by condoms.

Leaving aside the very humorous claim that he’s some special work of his imaginary friend and that he’s been especially sent to earth to be the voice of said imaginary friend, his words are criminal. Yes, criminal, as in they can kill people. One of the best known religious figures in the world coming out and saying that condoms don’t work is irresponsible! First of all there is scientific evidence saying that condom use does stop, in an overwhelming majority of cases, the spread of HIV and Aids.

Does the pope want to have less and less followers? People are surely not going to stop having sex, it’s in their nature, and if they extrapolate from this that the pope does not recommend condoms they probably won’t use them and they have a high probability to contract STDs and because of the lack of appropriate medical care, might die. Is that what the Pope wants?

The Vatican of course came out and said that the pope does recommend the use of condoms, but the damage had already been done. I hope such damage is avoided in the future. We don’t need a sexually frustrated man who thinks he speaks to an imaginary friend giving sexual advice.

The Telegraph (UK) online edition bublished a picture of a woman holding the above condom in Paris, released to mock the pope and his ridiculous statements. (continue reading…)

Give Twitter a break!

the Twitter whale

the Twitter whale

Many of you Twitter users may have been seeing this picture show up instead of the normal tiwtter page you were trying to see. The reason? You’re twittering too much!

I know we all love the service and some use it regularly but the poor birds seem to be getting tired and the whale is just too heavy. I also recommend using TwitterFox, a very nice addon for Firefox.

The Devil reads my blog!

The Devil

The Devil

Like most bloggers I use different tools to track how many readers I get and how the site is doing. One of these tools is http://www.mybloglog.com/, which for a couple of quid a month will give me info in real time.

A couple of days ago, as I was having a look at the statistics I realized that the Devil himself had read my blog! How do I know that? I had exactly 666 readers, the number which is said to represent evil, the Devil and his work in the very popular fiction book “The Bible”, written by “Many Unknown Authors”. I’ve uploaded a photo as proof, click on it for a printscreen.

The Devil reads my blog

The Devil reads my blog.

The modern fictional character “Devil” is represented by a number which has been proven to be different from that found in early Christian writings. Researchers at Oxford have used modern imaging techniques to read a 1700 year old papirus manuscript, a fragment of “Revelation”, part of “The Bible”. It seems the original number was 616, not 666. You can read more about this on  Wikipedia.

In the end it seems a modern depiction of the Devil paid me a visit, not the original Christian one. Too bad he didn’t leave a comment, I would have loved to know his oppinion. Maybe he will next time.

Poll: What kind of an atheist are you?

by Vlad Nistor on Mar.09, 2009, under Opinion

I’m interested to know what kind of atheists my readers are. If you’ve got stories about coming out or reasons for staying in the closet, please share it with us!

What kind of an atheist are you?

I am openly atheist, and I’ve been blogging about it for a few months. My family never was deeply religious, so it wasn’t “drilled” into me. They’re ok with us being atheists (me and my brother).
